Breakthrough T1D’s San Diego and Hawai’i chapter is hosting a virtual Returning to School with Diabetes Town Hall on July 28, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific / 2:00 p.m. HST, in partnership with the American Diabetes Association and Sansum Diabetes Research Institute. Their page says topics include 504 plans, emotional support, T1D tech, athletics, and – new this year – nutrition. They also point to broader school resources at breakthrought1d.org/t1d-resources/school.
We are not claiming we moderated or attended the session as we write this. We are reacting as parents who have to turn “helpful webinar” into Tuesday morning reality.
Original idea: treat school prep like two tracks
Town halls are dense. After an hour of slides, half the room remembers one tip and forgets the rest. We split the work:
Track A – free this week, no registration required
- Print or refresh the one-page low / high / “call parent if…” card for the nurse office
- Restock the school bag the way you would before a trip – same idea as our school box post. We keep a labeled school supply organizer and glucose tabs ready so we are not hunting on Sunday night.
- Text the school nurse for a 15-minute meeting before day one, not during the first fire drill
Track B – the event / official resources
- Join the town hall if the time works, or grab the recording later if they post one
- Skim Breakthrough T1D’s school resource hub for templates you can compare to your district’s process
- Bring one question you still cannot answer from last year
If you only do Track A, you still win August. If you only do Track B and never restock the bag, the webinar becomes noise.

Events light up when parents ask specific questions. Ours look like this (adjust to your school):
- “If the nurse is out, who is trained and where is the plan stored?”
- “How do we handle field trips and after-school sports without reinventing the 504 every time?”
- “What is the school’s process for device alarms and phone access in class?”
- “Who trains substitutes – and when?”

Original idea: do not wait for the first day to touch the 504
The trap we fell into early: assuming last year’s plan auto-renews into a new teacher, new PE schedule, and new lunchtime. Staff change. Schedules change. The year everything “worked” is not a guarantee.

What we are not doing
- Not treating a town hall as medical orders for dosing or devices
- Not assuming every school has a full-time nurse
- Not copying another state’s 504 template word-for-word into our district without review
- Not waiting until Labor Day weekend to open the supply bin
FAQ for parents
Do we need to attend if we already have a 504?
Not required. Useful if your kid’s tech, sports, or schedule changed, or if last year left open questions. A solid Track A week still matters either way.
Is this only for San Diego / Hawai’i families?

What if we are newly diagnosed in August?
